Traffic is not only a new way of editing, it’s a new way of thinking.
With Traffic you can:
- Change effects settings over multiple sequences simultaneously
- Make changes over multiple projects
- Loop your sequences, adding new footage every time around the loop
- Create slates easily
- Replace footage selectively based on nearly any clip parameter
If you can dream it, chances are Traffic will allow you to do it.
Traffic makes editing a joy again no matter who you are:
- The Online Editor
- See how an Online Editor uses Traffic to magically create multiple Lower Thirds across an entire sequence.(Quicktime, 7:35min – View)
- The Commercial Editor
- Watch a commercial editor work Traffic to create 15 versions of his spot in less than 7 minutes, complete with multiple tags. (Quicktime, 6:37min – View)
- The Visual Effects Editor
- Watch a Visual Effects Editor use Traffic to create sequences of work for his Discreet Smoke™ and Discreet Flame™ operators. (Quicktime, 5:46min – View)
What is Traffic?
Traffic presents a new model in the non-linear editing school of thought. It utilizes whats called a dependency graph, and it’s the same interface that high-end visual effects software like Apple's Shake™ uses. Operators connect “nodes” together to form a chain of events they want to perform on a clip. Traffic employs this node-based interface and has infused it with an editor's mindset. Changes and tweaks which seemed too tedious or even impossible to do can now be done in a matter of seconds.
Where’d the timeline go?
The traditional timeline interface presents the editor with the question ‘When do you want to do something?’ Traffic takes a different approach and asks ‘What do you want to do?’

Let's face it- much of the work we do day in and day out isn't really editing. Changing the fade up time on 83 lower thirds isn’t ever fun. Copying and pasting 46 color correct settings every time you make a change isn’t something most enjoy doing either. Traffic provides an easy way to make changes that are better suited away from the timeline. By the way, there is a Timeline node, just in case you need it.
Is it extensible?
Traffic features a plug-in architecture which allows third-party developers to create “widget-like” plug-ins to extend the capabilities of the software, like say editing Motion™ project files within Traffic or importing databases for automated subtitling. Several plug-ins already in development were unveiled at the September Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group, details of which will be posted on this website soon.
Traffic works with software supporting Apple's XML Interchange format such as:
- Final Cut Pro
- Discreet Smoke
- Discreet Fire
- Discreet Lustre
- Silicon Color FinalTouch HD
- Media 100i
- Media 100 844/x
- Media 100 iFinish
When combined with file translation software from Automatic Duck, Traffic can also work with:
- Avid
- Adobe Premiere Pro
- Discreet Combustion
- Quantel iQ™
